Do you know what your home was worth in April 1991? Unless you bought it around that time, I’d imagine the answer is probably no. Its current value might not give you much of a guide either, given just how different the changes in value have been in different parts of the country. Property values in London have risen six-fold since the mid-1990s, compared to less than three-fold in the North East of England. In Hackney they have risen more than nine times, compared to just two and a half times in County Durham. However, a look at your council tax band would give you a ballpark figure. That’s because council tax bands and bills, as well as central government top-ups to councils’ tax revenues, are still based on property values in April 1991. The big changes in the relative values of different properties in different parts of the country mean this situation is increasingly arbitrary and unfair though. Two properties worth the same now can face vastly different bills because they were worth different amounts 30 years ago.
