Sometime during the month of July, probably during the week of July 17th, the one-billionth DVD-Video disc album was shipped to a retailer somewhere in the United States. This is an extraordinary statement, first because it refers only to shipments into the U.S. market, and secondly because the DVD has been a commercial product only since the beginning of 1998. This growth in demand, and hence in production, has been the fastest of any recorded medium, audio-, video-, or data-related, in the history of the recorded media industry.
