Knowing your strengths-and weaknesses-is crucial to any organization's success. A big weakness of ours: measuring fuel economy. Gone are the days when you could click-click-click the fuel up to level with the lip of the filler neck during both the initial and final fill-ups, add up all the gallons, divide that into the number of miles traveled, and expect accurate results. Attempting to do that to today's vapor-recovery hardware damages it, and a widely variable temperature-influenced vapor bubble at the top of the tank means that stopping at exactly one or two clicks-even when using the same pump-can result in fill levels that vary by a half-gallon or more, introducing big errors during the typical one-or two-tank comparison-test drive (though if s fine for our long-term tests.)
