摘要

If you're anything like US, and we know we are, you remember the big Y2K hype a year ago, followed by the millennium celebrations that went off without a hitch. People gathered in cities all around the world to argue about whether the millennium ended in 1999 or 2000. (Well, except for people in Seattle, who cleverly cancelled their celebration when they discovered that a shady-looking tourist had booked a room in a hotel near the Space Needle.) Around the world, people regarded the change in the leading digit as an opportunity to usher in a new beginning, to ring out the old and ring in the new. Who knew that these thoughts, actually uttered by no one but invented for this reminiscence, would turn out to be so prophetic?
