Horace capron knew more than his share of hardship, but the 19th-century farmer, entrepreneur, family man, soldier and statesman overcame those challenges to leave a legacy in many places and institutions, including the National Guard. His story of perseverance and triumph, despite serious setbacks, is an inspiration today as his influence reaches halfway around the world in the 21st century. Born Aug. 31,1804 in Attleboro, Mass., Capron learned entrepreneurship. His father, Seth Capron, established the first cotton mill in New York, the Oneida Factory, and formed Oriskany Woolen Mills, now considered the oldest existing textile factory in the United States.
