摘要

May 2014 is the fortieth anniversary of the designation of Cobourg Peninsula, in the Northern Territory, as the world's first Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Located on the northernmost part of the mainland of Australia, Cobourg Peninsula is difficult to access by land. It is about 100 kilometres north of Kakadu National Park and 560 kilometres by road from Darwin. This isolation has helped Cobourg to retain many of the natural values that resulted in its listing as a Ramsar wetland. It has a variety of wetland habitats in an undisturbed condition, including freshwater springs, estuaries, creeks, mangroves, fringing corals and seagrass communities.
