摘要

Artistic representations of the landscape not only serve to record location but also document the development of a place. The National Library of Australia holds a diverse collection of topographical works, including an unusual panorama of the young city of Brisbane, View of Brisbane (1866). Attributed to the hand of travelling artist Joseph Backler (1813?-1895) by Richard Neville in 2004, the rediscovery of discussions held around the time the painting was created confirms this attribution and adds depth to Backler's career in Queensland. View of Brisbane is a significant document relating to colonial Queensland and presents a unique glimpse of development in Brisbane during the 1860s.
