摘要

Whover decided the dam in central Canberra that impounds Lake Burley Griffin should be named Scrivener Dam had a fine flair for irony. Charles Robert Scrivener, whose advice was highly influential in deciding the site for Australia's national capital, did not see eye to eye at all with Walter Burley Griffin, the American landscape architect whose design of the city won the 1912 international competition. A mere three lines in an exchange recorded in the 2700 pages of evidence given to a 1916 Royal Commission give a sense of things. Scrivener had twice emerged from retirement to give evidence, at times criticising Griffin's design. On the second such occasion Griffin, uncharacteristically, chose to cross-question him personally, suggesting that he had a score to settle.
