The 2010 Seymour Lecture in Biography was given in September by acclaimed English biographer Frances Spalding. Fresh from the United Kingdom, Spalding delivered a wonderful lecture, titled 'The Biographer's Contract', to an appreciative and eager audience. The reputed words of American poet, lecturer and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, 'There is properly no history; only biography', cited by Acting Director-General Warwick Cathro in the introductory remarks, were particularly apt for the occasion.
