By joining NATO at Istanbul summit in June 2004, Latvia became part of both processes - NATO widening and deepening through transformation. Third dimension of NATO policy where we participate is NATO operations. Hence, we support and participate in all of these facets of NATO policy and action. More specifically, at the Istanbul Summit it was decided that NATO has to expand further the Alliance's presence in Afghanistan, provide assistance to Iraq with training, launch a new partnership initiative with countries in the Mediterranean and Middle East and improve NATO's operational capabilities.
