摘要

The 2006 Summit in Riga will be landmark event for its host country Latvia and the entire Baltic region. A decade ago, many viewed the eastern littoral of the Baltic Sea as strictly off-limits to NATO. Now, largely thanks to NATO and EU membership, our region is prosperous, stable and secure. It is especially fitting that the 2006 NATO Summit should take place here. It underlines how in recent years the security environment in our region has improved and the pivotal role that NATO has played in this process.
