Beginning in 2003, the Swiss Armed Forces introduced a significant reform (so called "Armee XXI"). Only 9 years earlier, the mobilisation strength of the Armed Forces had numbered 4 Army Corps, one Aviation Corps (with 4 Brigades), 12 Army Divisions, 6 Territorial Zones and 17 Army Brigades, more than 700'000 soldiers, around 800 combat tanks, 560 self-propelled howitzers and 350 combat aircraft.
