When it was announced on 28 January 2005 that a contract to develop the US President's next advanced helicopter under the VXX programme would be awarded by the US Navy to an international industry team led by Lockheed Martin, a hurricane of anger and disappointment whipped loudly across some halls of the Pentagon and in more than a few US Congressional offices, further reverberating swiftly through US media channels and inside many a corporate headquarters.
