The 1998 Strategic Defence Review (SDR) reassessed Britain's security interests and defence needs in the post Cold War era and considered how the roles, mission and capabilities of the UK's Armed Forces should be adjusted to meet the new strategic realities. It reinforced the UK's international commitment to NATO, the UN, the OSCE and the WEU and concluded that, as well as defending national interests, the UK should discharge its responsibilities throughout the world and not stand idly by and watch humanitarian disasters or aggression go unchecked.
