摘要

Gen. Pavel Stefka spoke to MT's Wien Correspondent, Georg Ma-der on a wide range of topics addressing the current status and future prospects of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic (ACR). Effective on 1 January 2005, the Czech Republic has fully professional armed forces - the second former Warsaw Pact member nation after Hungary to achieve this important step. When questioned on the attractiveness of professional military service, and more in general of its "social status" within the Czech society, Gen. Stefka was very pleased to state that the Czech Armed Forces are not facing the recruitment shortcomings that have hampered the efforts by some other European countries to shift from conscription to a professional military. As regard the overall attitude by the Czech population, "It was only after NATO accession and the Kosovo war in 1999 that Czech society began to pay more attention to specific military issues, and this process has intensified since the 9/11 events.
