Land restoration or ecological restoration of lands is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed (SERI 2004). Each natural area is subject to or has been subjected to varying degrees of degradation. The conservation of natural areas requires a clear understanding of ecological restoration and the unique qualities of the natural area of concern. To conserve natural areas requires that ecological restoration be an integral component of land management. The threats and problems faced by natural ar-eas are many and seem to be associated with an overabundance of humans. We disturb the soil, introduce invasive species, fragment large landscapes, start fires, ignore culturally sensitive land management practices, add nitrogen from atmospheric fallout, and help cause global climate change.
