摘要

The nun moth, Lymantria monacha L., is a destructive pest of coniferous forests in Europe, and the closely related gypsy moth, L. dispar (L.), is a major pest of deciduous forests in Europe and North America. Females of both species produce the same sex phero-mone component, disparlure (cis-7,8-epoxy- 2-methyloctadecane), which is widely used in traps to detect and monitor their respective populations. Disparlure is optically active, but current methods of chemical analysis are unable to determine directly the enantiomeric composition synthesized by the respective females. Electroanten-nography (EAG) and single-cell electro-physiology have provided indirect evidence that gypsy moths produce almost 100% (+)-disparlure while nun moths produced both enantiomers, with a surprisingly high proportion (90%) being the (-)-enantiomer.
