It is easy to feel helpless in the face of the strain humans are placing on the Earth. Confronted with evidence of melting ice caps, depleted fish stocks, species extinction and deforestation, many opt to focus on more manageable concerns. No so for Japanese biomaterials company Spiber, which is tackling some of the big global challenges and hopes to inspire more people to do likewise. Here, its spokesman Kenji Higashi explains how the company is seeking new recruits who share its values and are comfortable working without a boss, choosing their projects and taking responsibility for setting their own salaries.
