Karolin Luger was bitten by the crystallography bug during a biophysics lecture in 1986. "One person gave a talk on X-ray crystallography," she recalls. "The lecture was not that good, but the diffraction patterns were so beautiful that I thought, 'I really want to learn how to do this.'" She learned. As a postdoc, she was first author of a paper that reported the crystal structure of a DNA-protein complex called the nucleosome (see K. Luger et al. Nature 389,251-260; 1997).
