Each year journalists and photographers from around the world crowd into a Stockholm hall to discover who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The glory obviously belongs to the laureates for their scientific achievements, but the award's prestige rubs off on the 50 professors from Karolinska Institutet, who are involved in the selection and announcement of the prize. Karolinska Institutet is of course well known as one of Europe's leading medical universities. It consistently ranks among the world top 50 universities and European top 70 in league tables. However, Anders Hamsten, its vice-chancellor believes "the Kl" must guard against resting on its laurels. Here he reveals how he plans to shake up the institution to deliver more ground-breaking research and contribute more to human health.
