The Younger Dryas was a cold period immediately before the present warm interglacial, and its global extent remains debatable. Previous work in the tropical Andes suggested extensive glacial advances during the Younger Dryas. New cosmogenic dating of glacial deposits, and reassessment of data sets from other Andean glaciers, show instead that maximal glacial advances took place in the preceding Antarctic cold reversal. Thus, the Younger Dryas may have been associated with modest glacial retreat rather than a major advance.
