As the retinal vasculature forms in the developing eye, the blood vessels supplying the transparent hyaloid membrane surrounding the vitreous body regress. This process is important clinically because excessive vascular growth is a major cause of blindness in premature infants. Surprisingly, Richard Lang and colleagues have now found that light is involved in this major change in tissue architecture by stimulating regression of developing hyaloid vasculature in mice, acting through the photoreceptor melanopsin. In the absence of either light or melanopsin, the vascular endothelial growth factor A is up-regulated and abnormal retinal angiogenesis results. Whether the same processes are involved in human eye development remains to be determined.
