When Amanda Weltman discovered physics as an undergrad-Wuate at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, she thought that "understanding the way the Universe worked was just about the coolest job anyone could have". Weltman was just 24 when she shot to fame with a proposal about how the Universe works at the grandest scales. Her breakthrough paper, 'Chameleon Cosmology (J. Khoury and A. Weltman Phys. Rev. D 69,044026; 2004), published when she was graduate student at Columbia University in New York, gave rise to a popular theory to explain the phenomenon of dark energy - the mysterious force that is hypothesized to be speeding up the expansion of the Universe.
