An immense gas cloud several times the mass of Earth has started its death spiral around the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way. Observations from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile, revealed on 17 July, show the cloud swinging and stretching around the black hole.
