Bacteria have evolved molecular machines to secrete toxins and proteins into their environment or into target cells. The distinctive features of these machines led microbiologists to classify them by type; the type VI secretion system1, for example, has the unusual function of injecting toxins into bacterial prey, causing death2. This system also shows unprecedented similarity to the puncturing devices and injection machines of bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria3.
