The capacity of a noisy channel to transmit can be readily calculated as a function of bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio for classical systems, but the introduction of quantum effects makes calculations intractable. Graeme Smith and John Smolin have now developed an exactly solvable model of communications with a fully quantum electromagnetic field that gives explicit expressions for all point-to-point capacities of noisy quantum channels.
