The zinc finger protein Ars2 (arsenite-resistance protein 2) is known for its role in microRNA biogenesis. Another function for Ars2 has now been identified: the protein acts as a sequence-specific transcription factor to promote self-renewal of neural stem cells in the adult mouse brain. The process is RNA-independent, proceeding via activation of the pluripotency factor Sox2.
