Carbon-14 concentrations in annual tree rings are an indicator of cosmic-ray activity: ~(14)C is produced by the interaction of atmospheric nitrogen with cosmic-ray neutrons. This analysis of C in two Japanese cedar trees covering the period ad 750 to 820 provides evidence of a rapid increase of about 12%o in the ~(14)C content from ad 774 to 775, about 20 times greater than that expected from ordinary solar modulation. The authors conclude that it was caused by an extremely energetic event in our space environment.
