The drug abacavir can be an effective treatment for HIV but it is also associated with an autoimmune response in 5-10% of patients. These hypersensitivity reactions, which include fever, rash and gastrointestinal problems, mandate immediate drug cessation to prevent the emergence of life-threatening symptoms. It has previously been reported that abacavir hypersensitivity syndrome occurs in patients who express one particular major histocompat-ibility complex (MHC) class I protein, and genetic screening for this protein variant is an effective way to avoid this adverse drug reaction.
