Heidelberg has long been a hub for the life sciences. In 2006, scientists from Heidelberg University together with partners from academia and industry formed a novel research cluster, CellNetworks, in molecular life sciences. CellNetworks was awarded 'Cluster of Excellence'funding in the first round of Germany's Excellence Initiative (El), implemented to promote outstanding research projects and to enhance the international profile of German science. Since then, the cluster has grown to include more than 100 groups from six faculties at Heidelberg University and from several partners: the German Cancer Research Center, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, the Central Institute for Mental Health and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies. Together, CellNetworks groups have produced over 300 joint publications since 2007. The cluster recently won a second round of El funding - a mandate to build on its accomplishments.
