Images of scientific results matter. They support data exploration and communication, and are particularly valuable in the age of big data. They help to transcend disciplinary, cultural and language barriers. Some are truly beautiful, and are displayed in art museums. Others have gone viral on the Internet. A select few — such as Darwin's tree of life or Watson and Cricks DNA structure — have changed our view of the world forever.
