摘要

Most of chemistry, whether in industry, the research Lab, or nature, happens in a solvent. Making a reaction happen can depend crucial-Ly on finding the right solvent. Yet our understanding of how chemical reactions are influenced by the solvent remains piecemeal, Scientists at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum (RUB), together with colleagues at the Technische Universitat Dortmund, the University of Essen-Duisburg, three Max Planck Institutes in Miilheim and Dusseldorf and the Fraunhofer Institute in Oberhausen, will collaborate in a program called Ruhr Explores Solvation (RESOLV) to launch a new field of interdisciplinary scientific endeavour called solvation science. This will develop a consistent, coherent and unified view of the solvent's role in chemistry, bringing together many techniques, approaches and ideas that have evolved in disparate areas of the chemical sciences over the past few decades.
