Hurricane Sandy, which was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as wind speeds dropped from about 145 kilometres per hour to around 105 kilometres per hour, made landfall near Atlantic City, New Jersey, at about 8 p.m. Easterr time on 29 October. The storm knocked out power to millions and closed public transport in numerous cities, including New York, which was among the hardest hit.
