Gunma University Hospital is using beams of carbon ions to treat some previously incurable cancers. Results have been excellent, as the carbon ions kill the cancer cells with minimal damage to the healthy tissues around them. As Japan's only general hospital offering this cutting-edge cancer treatment, Gunma University receives the highest number of registered cancer patients per bed among the hospitals in Japan's national university network.
