The AMMS plays a major role in responding to disease outbreaks as China's leading medical emergency response agency. The academy's frontline response expertise has been called upon repeatedly in recent years to contain outbreaks of SARS, avian and pandemic flu - and as the country's last line of defence carries the ultimate responsibility for public health when all other defences are exhausted.
