There was nothing inevitable about the path Brazil took to where it is today — a country with a vibrant biofuel industry that annually turns half of its sugarcane harvest into 24 billion litres of etha-nol to power 12.5 million vehicles. In 2009, nearly 1.2 million jobs in Brazil stemmed from the sugarcane, sugar and ethanol sectors.
