Haiyu Ren completed her PhD in agricultural and biological engineering in 2006, just as biofuels research was heating up. Oil prices were spiking, and governments and investors worldwide were beginning to look at biofuel options beyond soya biodiesel and ethanol made from maize (corn). Money began to flow to research into fuels made from woodchips, algae and wheat straw.
