After 30 years and 135 missions, from the launch of Columbia in 1981 (pictured, far left), through the loss of Challenger in 1986 (second left) and Columbia in 2003, NASAs Space Transportation System has ended. The shuttle programme, which delivered the Hubble Space Telescope and serviced the International Space Station (centre, with Endeavour), officially concluded on 21 July with the touchdown of space shuttle Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center, Florida (two of its four crew members, Rex Walheim and Sandra Magnus, pictured second from right; final landing far right).
