Thermochemical routes to making biofuels are perhaps best exemplified by the production of fuels from lignocellulose bio-mass - sources of which include agricultural and forestry residues (such as wheat stalks and wood), municipal waste (paper and wood) and specially grown crops (such as Miscanthus grasses and poplar trees). But although lignocellulose is abundant5 and cheap, its conversion to biofuels is expensive.
