The AMMS' military roots have seen the academy develop core strengths in research on military medical sciences. Yet despite its military origins, the main beneficiaries of such research are civilians. Research on the biological effects and symptoms of acute radiation sickness and long-term radiation exposure, for example, generates vital information for the development of key technologies and drugs for treating radiation damage-a risk more often associated with the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. In chemical poisoning research, the AMMS seeks to understand the mechanism of action of hazardous chemicals and to develop detection, decontamination and treatment methods for chemical agents. The AMMS' research on protective medicine against biological agents focuses on the detection, screening and source-tracing of pathogens, and the creation of drugs and vaccines against pathogens such as malaria, influenza, dysentery and cholera.
