In a letter to Nature in 1939, Evert Johannes Willem Verwey described the first example of a charge-ordering transition in a solid, in the mineral magnetite, Fe_3O_4 (E. J. W Verwey Nature 144,327-328; 1939). Although this 'Verwey' transition has since been observed in other transition metal oxides, the precise structure of the charge-ordered state in magnetite has remained elusive.
