Certain uncertainty Richard Besser was acting director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when the swine flu pandemic was emerging. The way that he handled communication with public health officials and the media at the time is generally considered to have helped keep the response to the pandemic on track: now he is part of the media machine himself, at ABC News. Brendan Maher spoke to Besser about the early phases of the pandemic and his thoughts on how it is developing.
