Aimee deCathelineau didn't quite grasp the duties of a journal editor until one particularly demanding interview test. The interviewer asked her to read a year's worth of the journal's papers and identify the three that were most appropriate to the journal and the three that should be published elsewhere -or not at all. She didn't get that position. But now, as an associate editor at the Journal of Cell Biology in New York City, deCathelineau calls it the perfect exercise for someone to determine whether he or she is cut out for the job. "When you read 100 papers you find out what a journal is really about," she says, adding that doing so also reveals one's tolerance for reading so many papers.
