The simple life The much-anticipated announcement last week that researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute had made a replicating 'synthetic cell' - essentially a bacterium with its DNA replaced by a 100% prosthetic genome - has captured headlines worldwide. Nature asked eight synthetic biologists to put the achievement in context, and to speculate on how it will influence future work in fields as diverse as bioengineering, systems biology and even - in that it questions the definition of 'life' itself -rnphilosophy.
