Road Kill The Tanzanian government's plan for a two-lane highway across the Serengeti National Park is fiercely opposed by the WWF, Greenpeace and the UN World Heritage Committee among others. In an Opinion piece, a group of ecologists explains why conservationists are so concerned. By obstructing the migratory route of millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles, the road will not only threaten the survival of these herbivores, but the lions, cheetahs and wild dogs that prey on them will also decline. The road's opponents say it would cause the collapse of the largest remaining migratory system on Earth -and destroy a major part of Tanzania's tourism trade. The economic benefits of opening up the centre of the country could be achieved by an alternative route, say the Serengeti's defenders.
