On 18 July, geophysi-cist Reiner Rummel received a phone call that made his heart sink. The European Space Agency (ESA)rnhad stopped receiving data from a €350-mil-lion (US$471-million) satellite that Rummel had spent nearly 20 years designing, building, testing and shepherding into orbit. The craft, burdened with the unwieldy name of the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE), had been in space for little more than a year. Now it looked as if it might be lost for good, undone by a glitch in the communications system that sends data back and forth from the satellite to the ground.
