Fifty years before Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, Jean Baptiste Lamarck published Philosophie Zoologique, in which he courted with many concepts then revolutionary but now commonplace. He wrote on evolutionary adaptation, speciation, and the antiquity of the Earth. Yet today, while Darwinism is a mainstay of biological science, 'Lamarckism' has become a shorthand for foolishness. He deserves better, though as Dan Graur et al, explain in their 'In Retrospect' appreciation of Lamarck's opus magnum, part of Lamarck's problem with posterity lies in his "maddening, confusing and repetitive" prose.
