Tokyo Institute of Technology alumni have launched several important technological ventures and even figured in the birth of industries. One such graduate was Kozo Kagami (1896-1985), who introduced to Japan the art of cutting and engraving crystal glass. The company he founded, Kagami Crystal, remains Japan's leading producer of fine crystal.Kagami, a native of Gifu Prefecture, studied ceramics at a vocational school established near his hometown and later moved to Tokyo to study industrial design at what is now the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He completed his studies there in 1914 and became an instructor in in the institute's ceramics program.
