Increasingly sophisticated techniques are being used to persuade ancient rocks to yield information about conditions on and in the early Earth - for instance, about the oxidation state of the mantle. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. In science, one datum point can be worth a thousand models. On page 960 of this issue, Berry et al. report the first results obtained by applying a new approach to estimating the oxidation-reduction (redox) condition of Earth's upper mantle during the Archaean, some 2,700 million years ago.
