Neuropsychiatric syndromes, including affective disorders and major psychoses, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are among the most common and disabling conditions to afflict mankind. Four of the 10 most disabling diseases worldwide are neuropsychiatric, and collectively they constitute one-half of the global disease burden. In fact, unipolar depression is the fourth leading cause of disease burden and the single leading cause of disability.
